Why I ask for small donations also from charity organizations

First of all because the only people interested in my "slummy" photos are such organizations. So why should I work for free while the people employed in such organizations get an income or - if volunteering - usually have some alternative income?

Second because I also give charity. When American Pictures was a huge commercial success I donated all the money to build schools and support the anti-apartheid struggle in Africa. Today my income after expenses is only like that of an average school teacher and does not allow for such big projects any more.

Instead I spend much of my money on the people I photograph. Certainly many of them need love more than money, but love (our continuing attention, friendship or whatever you call it) is also very costly. Even though I sleep in my van and never stay in hotels, each trip to the South to visit my friends usually ends up costing me 3-4000 dollars in break downs, car insurance and other car related expenses. I can't provide you with my photos without doing these trips.

But many of my photographed subjects also need my financial help. Probably no other photographer have so many friends in prison as I do, friends who constantly write me letters asking me to send money for lawyers or for necessities for their children while they are in prison.

A good case in point is Linda - whose hopeful, uplifting pictures are some of the most frequently used by churches. Here she is seen in childhood and here she is seen with her son one of the few times I have seen her out of prison during her adult life. However, a month after the last photo in 2004 both she and her son ended up in prison and I again had to send her money for lawyers.

Why should I bear all such expenses alone while you use Linda's and my pictures for free?

Lately I have been so overworked by requests for free pictures for all kinds of worthy causes that I will no longer spend half my working days mailing off pictures - or even answer your requests - unless you first send a donation !!!

Or even better - send a donation big enough for me to afford a web designer to make an automatic system for downloading pictures when you pay for them.

Therefore please send whatever donation you can afford first on a check to
