Worst slum in America



This photo is taken on the first day I tried to hitchhike in the USA. I was terribly nervous, but a lovely white minister’s daughter – Gloria Gardels – picked me up and took me home through East St. Louis. 32 years later she was killed in a traffic accident close to where she picked me up.
