40 acres and a mule

After slavery all former slave families were supposed to be given 40 acres and a mule which most never got. But I was amazed to see how many who a hundred years later - in the 1970’es - still lived with nothing more than that. Certainly it was too little to be able to compete effectively with the white farmers who thus slowly took over their land. Today there are still a few sharecroppers left (according to Atlanta Constitution), but hardly any independent black farmers.
