Dear Friends,
In
this current, painful climate, it feels difficult to come together
in any type of celebration. The ongoing war, division and
polarization makes the spirit of peace and unity feel out of reach.
Many have said it is too soon to come together.
Still, there are those building bridges in the midst of separation:
Israelis and Palestinians in Israel, Jews and Muslims around the
world are coming together to share their experiences and pain. In
Denmark, many Muslim friends are condemning the rising Anti-Semitism
while Jewish voices are rising up in solidarity with the Palestinian
struggle for equality and freedom and against Islamophobia. Even
from within the struggle, there are those able to deeply empathize
with both sides, despite the reactions they face from their friends
and families.
Even though the climate is still fraught, we would like to provide a
space for those people, Jewish or Muslim, Israeli or Palestinian -
especially those whose friendships across these divides have been
tested in the recent months - to come together. We recognize that
this may be difficult while we are still fearing and grieving, bombs
are still falling, hostages are still not home, and people are being
forced to flee their homes.
Still, we hold this event in the spirit of an alternative response
to the times.
We
hold the belief that both sides equally deserve a safe and free
home, with dignity. This is not an event that attempts to answer the
question of how; rather, our goal in Salaam Shalom is simply to
provide a space to share, listen and connect while dropping the need
to convince each other, at-least for one evening.
As
we head into the season of Channukah - the Jewish festival of lights
- let's come together to bring a tiny bit of light into a dark
moment.
